(Scene cuts to Gandalf leading a horse with Frodo across some grass against the sunrise)
Gandalf: Come along, Samwise. Keep up.
(Sam waddles across the screen with a backpack of pots and pans. Gandalf leads the two through a field)
Gandalf: Be careful, both of you. The enemy has many spies in his service: birds, beasts. (looks suspiciously at Frodo) Is it safe?
(Frodo puts his hand over his chest pocket)
Gandalf: (warningly) Never put it on, for the agents of the Dark Lord will be drawn to its power. Always remember, Frodo, the Ring is trying to get back to its master. It wants to be found.
(Gandalf pats Frodo on his shoulder before mounting his horse and racing off in another direction. Frodo and Sam look around warily before walking on past cottages, waterfalls, meadows, until they reach a cornfield where Sam abruptly stops)
Sam: This is it.
Frodo: This is what?
Sam: If I take one more step, it'll be the farthest away from home I've ever been.
Frodo: C'mon, Sam. (Sam hesitantly steps forward. Frodo puts his arm around him) Remember what Bilbo used to say? "It's a dangerous business,
Bilbo: (v.o.) Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."
(Sam is cooking some sausages in a pan, smoking, as Frodo reclines on a tree branch. Frodo looks up at a noise, and then down at Sam)
Frodo: Sam. (smiling) Wood-elves.
(They rush behind a log and hide as to not be seen as they watch the procession of Elves go down the path)
Frodo: They're going to the Harbor beyond the White Towers. To the Grey Havens.
Sam: They're leaving Middle-earth.
Frodo: Never to return.
Sam: (forlornly) I don't know why it makes me sad.
(Screen now shows Frodo lying down with his eyes shut and Sam rolling over, trying to become comfortable)
Sam: Everywhere I lie there's a dirty, great root stickin' into my back.
Frodo: (dreamily) Just shut your eyes and imagine you're back in your own bed with a soft mattress and a lovely feather pillow.
Sam: It's not working, Mr. Frodo. I'm never going to be able to sleep out here.
Frodo: (smiling with his eyes still shut) Me neither, Sam.
(Shows foggy meadow where the nose of a Nazgûl horse comes into view. Gandalf rides hastily to Orthanc)
Saruman: (walking down the stairs of Orthanc to meet Gandalf) Smoke rises from the Mountain of Doom. The hour grows late and Gandalf the Grey rides to Isengard seeking my counsel. (Gandalf dismounts his horse) For that is why you have come, is it not? My old friend.
Gandalf: (bowing his head) Saruman.
(The wizards are shown walking through the forest next to the tower where Crebain are shown flying)
